Vancouver Island:: friends + fam

I’m thinking these may be my last few outdoor posts of our girls ; the weather has now changed, and aside from a few Winter Wonderland shots I’d like to attempt up at the ski hill, I’m not planning on torturing the wee ones for much longer….although they don’t really seem to mind that much:) This is a long post as it’s a mixture from the past month or so…..a few from my stay in Nanaimo with a couple shots of my girlriends’ very photogenic kids, of course since the girls were tagging along I needed some of them on an actual beach too; MAN I miss the ocean!  We then ventured to Victoria where my Mum and 3 of my siblings live. I’d promised Mum I would attempt pics of the 4 grandkids together and it actually worked out …the girls were a bit chilly, dirty, sniffly and wild but in the end they had fun and we all got what we wanted ( us-photos, the rugrats got tic-tacs and cookies…YAY for treats)!!!

It was a good trip, but of course we’re happy to be home and getting into winter-mode. I’m not quite sure how I feel about that quite yet; luckily the hubby and I are heading to a warmer climate….I’ll be shooting a wedding in Playa Del Carmen in 2 weeks; good timing as Mike and I haven’t been on a holiday together since we lived overseas 5 years ago and it IS TIME!!!

Now on with the good stuff…

This first image may just be my fave of the girls….I can only imagine what Eve was thinking:)
7846bShe really does adore her big sis….lucky little thing:)7849bgirlsb
The Holland kiddos….thanks for having us guys!

Cousins…my sister’s girls and mine finally in a photo together…..man, I give kudos to child photogs – it is HARD work!
8142lbCan you believe that Nevaeh and her big cousin next to her are only 7 weeks apart???  That’s right, my girl is lacking in the height department, that’s for sure…..luckily she makes up for it in personality:)8126lb8208blogI just love this shot of Sam’s grubby little toddler hands…I believe I was bribing them with food in this one ( she was just 16 months in these photos and it worked like a charm)!

This is my Mum, “Nanny” to the girls….she’s been asking me for two years to redo her headshots for work and sadly it’s taken me this long. Well, I’m thrilled with the results and we honestly took about 5 minutes to get these. Mum is one of those people who ( up until now)! looks MUCH better in person…she’s been told that the photo she’s been using the past 6 years for marketing makes her look about 60 –  definitely not the case anymore; you look smokin’ in these and I’m so glad we pulled it together!

11/02/2009 - 9:17 pm brooke bowland - the first image kills me. it is a must up and large! all the kiddos are adorable. how lucky are you to photograph such super cuties and your mom...wowzers lady...HOTTIE!

11/01/2009 - 5:06 pm Reb - Your mom is gorgeous! Soooo cute.

10/31/2009 - 12:17 pm Shelley - I love the black & white outfits on your girls...adorable! I love your post...always so soft and pretty :)

10/31/2009 - 9:52 am Jen Sander - whoa michele....your mom is HOTTTTT!!!! LOVIN the new BLOG! I have to say I think my fave is the one of E. laughing at N. laughing!

10/31/2009 - 7:38 am Simone - Jen's girls could be twins! Great pictures. Your mum's definitely don't look 60... I'd say more like mid 40s. Love the black & whites of your girls. The first one of Eve is hilarious. I see a little bit of her big sis's personality in that one.

Mixin’ it up….

My first “mixed” post…..I don’t really enjoy doing this, but I guess when you take on too much that’s what happens:)  Hopefully my clients can all forgive me for making them share their sneak!  There will be full posts in the next few days of each of these sessions…. and more:)  Below are imgaes of 5 day old baby Evan, sisters Brittany and Alicia as well as Brit’s fiance Kyle, a fabulous After session with Chris + Christine…..who happen to be great friends of Mike + Cara, who also did an After session with me this past weekend.  Thanks all for being understanding, and I promise to keep working away on your images…..you were all truly amazing in front of the camera and make me love what I do that much more.

Thank you:)

Introducing sweet baby Evan. It took a bit, but once we got him down he slept like a dream. Thank you so much for letting me do his very first session:)

314blog230bwblogI had such a great time with Alicia and Brittany….it was raining, we were losing light and were absolutely surrounded by monstrous cow patties; I even stepped in a fresh one. Disgusting. But worth it – thanks for having such a good time with it girls!9554lblog9719lblogI’m crossing my fingers to be able to shoot Brit + Kyle’s wedding next year…..mid-fall, a great theme and perhaps a little choreography ?!  Let’s hope they like these!!!  9753lblog9772blogThis was my very first morning session; and for those of you who know me, sunrise + Michele = a bad situation. I actually have a 30 minute “don’t talk to me” rule when I wake up:)  Well, Chris + Christine just may have changed my mind….I was loving the early light, in the second image it actually poured down like spotlights on them. Yum-my!9081blog

8980lblogAnd last, but definitely not least, Mike + Cara. You may remember them from their wedding just a few weeks back. Creative minds, great style and Cara just happens to be an avid watcher of “America’s Next Top Model.” I think she may take it seriously as her presence in front of the camera is stellar. Mike recently started his new job as a firefighter, so of course we needed to work that into the shots; LOVE them…..stay tuned for many, many more great images. Thanks so much guys! 615blog686lblog

Eve Again

Our little girl has already been a part of our family for eight months…. EIGHT whole months has come and gone and I wouldn’t change a second of it. The girls are just amazing together, and Eve couldn’t have a better big sis than she does, Nevaeh truly adores her. I’m going to leave it at that and let the images from her 8 month “birthday” speak for themselves, as I really don’t have the words to describe just how proud I am of these images, and of my girl. And a warning to all the women reading this; she will most likely give you baby-fever…..my heart is still aching a little from these. Beautiful girl….

For processing I used Totally Rad Action’s Lux soft at 20% and Get Faded neutral at 10%. All images sharpened with Kubota’s Magic Sharp.

Janine + Ava :: Because

While on the Island last month I got the chance to spend some time with my girlfriend Janine and her family. It was great getting to know her hubby and daughter Ava better, as I feel somewhat responsible for them meeting!  Okay, I can’t take all the credit……Janine and I met while working at the bank about 5 years ago. I had just returned from almost 4 years traveling and working throughout Asia with my hubby and although I was thrilled to be back in B.C., I missed Asia and still had “the bug”. So, when Janine started mentioning that she just wasn’t happy with how things were going where we lived, I  suggested selling her car and moving away. Far, far away…..I’m sure her parents loved my suggestion, especially since their little girl was not yet 20 years old! Needless to say, Janine moved to Taiwan, where I myself had started out my adventures and a few months later her and Emon met, fell in love and ended up getting married in his home country of Nigeria. Ava was born a year later back home in B.C. and now they’re all together anxiously awaiting their second little one. I’m so glad to have played a small hand in such a fabulous couple meeting. I wish you all the best and can’t wait to get my hands on your new baby:)

10/23/2009 - 11:45 am Amber Hughes - These are ridiculously beautiful! Love everything about them... especially the closeups of Ava. What a cutie!

10/23/2009 - 11:37 am Rebecca - Beautiful! Amber was my sister's wedding photographer - isn't she amazing? PS I love your new blog!

Amber Hughes:: Workshop

This session was a big deal for me as it was the first “class” I’ve ever taken. While searching through random photog blogs a few months ago, I came across Amber Hughe’s site. I was blown away and instantly knew I had to convince her to take Brooke and I under her wing for a few learning sessions. Luckily for us, she agreed! What draws me to her work is not only the clarity and fabulous compositions but the lighting. Ahhhh, her lighting really is to-die-for. And believe it or not, she just began getting creative with her off camera lighting a year ago. Inspirational to say the least. We spent a few hours together, hitting a few spots down at Granville Island in Vancouver and B and I were both amazed at how much we learned. Off camera lighting isn’t nearly as intimidating as I’d thought !

Unfortunately the day wasn’t as long as we’d hoped….I was on the Island  dropping off my girls and would you believe that the ferry was late?! Of course, the one day I’m paying to be somewhere they decide to get backed up! Everything worked out in the end….my girlfriend Janine and her wonderful husband Emon kindly came over with me to be our guinea pigs, and although we didn’t shoot a tonne, I did get a handful of images I hope they’ll love. There was a lot of standing around to be done by the two of them as Brooke and I tried to take in all the info Amber had for us, so thank you guys for being troopers….especially since Miss Janine is expecting and was not feeling her usual self!

Brooke and I are definitely going to book again….hopefully a session in the spring and another in the fall if Amber is still willing to take us on!  Make SURE to go check out her blog….I promise it will not only inspire you to think outside of the box, but it will put a smile on your face:)  Amber, thank you so much for being so warm and putting us at ease; we had a great day!

These images are a mixture of off camera lighting and natural light….off camera equipment mainly provided by Amber, which means we need to go shopping!

10/26/2009 - 3:16 pm Cathy Empey - Amber is amazing! Sounds like an amazing learning experience too! I really love the last image! Gorgeous!

10/24/2009 - 9:34 am Chelsea - Mish, love, love, love the first one of them in the metallic background! These are fab and even though I don't always comment, I look at everything you do and "show you off" to all I know! much love!

10/23/2009 - 11:33 am Amber Hughes - Thanks so much for the glowing review Michele! It was truly a pleasure to teach both you and Brooke... you were both fast learners and so very easy to talk to. I had a fantastic time! Love the shots you got! Can't wait to take you both out again... I'm already excited to see the next batch of shots we get! :)

Dex

Here is my first little “man” shoot I’ve had all summer….it’s been a summer of girls in our neck o the woods, so it was great to try out my skills on someone who wasn’t bundled in pink! Baby Dex was just over a week old in these photos, and although he wasn’t as curled up as a super-newbie, he cooperated just perfectly. You may remember Mum from her belly shoot….you can see here where Mister D gets his great looks from, I mean come ON….those lips are just so, SO smoochable !  It was great to be able to snuggle such a sweetie, and even with my littlest Miss in tow for this shoot, Dex still managed to give me a bit of baby fever. Thanks alot guys!

Hope you love em’ !7048lblog7045blog7010blog

10/22/2009 - 10:12 am Heidi - Super cute!

Fresh.

So here it is…..I’ve finally put my other work aside and started working on the fancy new blog. Well, maybe it’s not so fancy but in time I’m sure it’ll be just right. Simple, clean and fresh with a modern- vintage feel. This is literally the first time I’ve even come on here and really don’t have a clue how to do anything but post a few photos. Thank you to Brooke and Erica for starting everything up for me. Make sure to stay tuned for the new logo, header and of course tonnes of new posts I’m trying to catch up on. Of course it wouldn’t be a proper post without photos, so here are a few of my  sweet little girls. Thank you to each and every one of you who stops by……I truly love being able to do this job and it makes it even better knowing that others appreciate it.    Now on with the goods…..

10/23/2009 - 10:20 am Candice - My gosh, your girls are absolutely gorgeous Mish! You really capture their beauty in all your photo's. I cant wait until you shoot my baby B again some time:) Im starting to play with some of the manual settings on my Nikon D60 and wanted to ask you what settings (ISO, etc) you shot these photo's in? I know you NEVER use flash (although I like flash but I know nothing about photography, lol) so please drop me an email with a few tips on how to shoot in natural light and not so natural light (my camera has an "A", "S" and "P" setting in manual mode and so far, I have just played with "A"). Oh ya, and what editing program do you use? I need to get one, the IPHOTO program on my MAC is so limited (I hate it).

10/22/2009 - 3:11 pm Marie - Michele, your daughters are stunning! I love your work.

10/22/2009 - 12:00 pm Liz - Love, Love, Love those chunky little drumsticks on your baby! These photos are adorable.

10/21/2009 - 3:05 pm Rachel Wills - WOW! Michele amazing pictures! the girls are so cute. Eve is very photogenic just like her big sister!

10/21/2009 - 12:51 pm Heidi - Your girls get cuter every day! Can't wait to see how your blog will evolve. I have bookmarked it as one of my faves and will check back often!

10/21/2009 - 12:32 pm Rhiannon - Looks great! Looking forward to seeing the finished product, I'm sure it will be beautiful :) Oh, and it helps your kids are adorable!

10/21/2009 - 12:01 pm Simone - Looks great Michele! I know the feeling of being caught in transition. I'm the process of changing my website and blog too. You'll feel so good when it's all said and done! I can't wait to see the rest. BTW your chillin's are A-DORABLE!!

10/21/2009 - 12:19 am brooke bowland - yup...i love them. could your girls get any more beautiful? seriously. that first one makes me want 4 more kids! ha. oh and the one of just Eve on her tum...something about it makes me tear up. Love.

Hailey + Damien:: Engaged

I’ve done it again……ended up with a fabulous couple who is kind, intelligent, funny and seriously smokin’ in front of the camera. Hailey and Damien, you both rocked it for us. Brooke and I were fortunate enough to book this great couple for their wedding in 2010, and we are VERY excited – if you’d had a sneak at the dress, you would be too!  The shoot was the first time we had all met, and B and I felt instantly comfortable with them. Comfortable enough for me to trust Damien to catch me if I fell off the roof of a 100 year old cabin I decided to climb up….not one of my finer moments considering I didn’t even end up with a great shot from up there!  Everything came together and we truly had a great time.

Thank you again for booking us; we are SO looking forward to your big day……now enjoy your photos!

Cara + Mike:: Married

You may remember this couple from their uber-fabulous engagement session……they were such great models that their faces even ended up on Vintage Glam Weddings blog, making me, of course…very proud:) Well, they didn’t disappoint when it came to their big day. Each tiny detail was unique and reflective of the couple, and surprises seemed to pop up around every corner. From the purple jeweled shoes to the birdcage veil Cara “forgot” to tell me about…and their first dance. The dance. WOW! Once they get video up I will make sure to upload it for all to see, because it was spectacular! After a complete outfit change into full-on 80’s inspired hip-hop gear, Mike and Cara busted through the reception doors to the beats of Boom Boom Pow. The choreography was amazing and the played the roles to a “t“. It’s going to be tough to top that one I tell ya!

Thank you to everyone involved…..Heiress Salon for the do’s , Mac for the makeup and Linden Gardens for keeping your venue looking so beautiful. And a BIG thank you to my fave second shooter, Brooke Bowland for helping me out….SUCH a great time!

Thank you so much to both of you for choosing me; I loved every second of it…..
